HISTORY
In this historic townhouse on Ogarna Street, dating back to 1872, we have created a space where architecture, cuisine, wine and music come together.
FOOD & WINE
Our cuisine combines local ingredients and seasonality with a contemporary approach. Complementing it is a selection of around 150 wines from different parts of the world - from classic regions to more unexpected discoveries.
MUSIC
Music is part of the DNA of CANIS. Years ago, this very building was home to a music club where music lovers gathered to share records and attend concerts. Today, we continue that tradition in our own way.
history
The townhouse at 27/28 Ogarna Street in Gdańsk, formerly known as Hundegasse, is one of the few buildings in this part of the city to have survived the destruction of the Second World War.
In 1893, its new owner, Oscar Voigt, had the interiors transformed into a hotel named GERMANIA. The ground floor housed a café and wine bar, while an atrium with a garden could be accessed from the first floor. Bathrooms were located on every floor.
The hotel remained here until 1903, when the building changed ownership.
The next occupant was Gedania Loge Nr. 3 der Provinz Westpreussen, a Masonic lodge belonging to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of the Province of West Prussia.
Between 1922 and 1926, the townhouse was home to Warsaw United Bank S.A., which specialised primarily in financing and servicing international trade.
From the autumn of 1927 until 1937, the building housed Cafe Germania, a popular entertainment venue combining a café and dance hall.
In 1939, the townhouse most likely came under the control of a trusteeship office and was subsequently sold to Alfred Centnerowski, the owner of an auction house.
After the war, following the necessary renovation, the building reportedly served as a bank once again for a short period. It was later occupied by the publishing cooperative Prasa-Książka-Ruch.
In the 1970s, the ground floor became home to an EMPIK music store.
Since 2017, CANIS MUSIC & WINE has continued this story — a place where food, wine and music meet within the walls of a townhouse with more than 150 years of history.
canis THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME
The former Hundegasse - today’s Ogarna Street - takes its name from an old city kennel located near the fire station. The dogs kept there were used to guard the Granary Island and the valuable goods stored in its warehouses throughout the night.
It was these unusual four-legged guardians that gave Ogarna Street its name.
CANIS is our contemporary tribute to this piece of Gdańsk’s heritage.
wine & spirits
At CANIS, we take pride in a carefully curated selection of wines and spirits. Our collection brings together renowned classics and more distinctive finds, offering something for both those who appreciate familiar favourites and true connoisseurs.
With such a diverse selection, there is always something new to discover — and the right pour for every occasion.
cuisine
At CANIS, our cuisine is built around seasonal produce, local ingredients and a contemporary approach to familiar flavours. We focus on bold combinations, quality ingredients and dishes that leave room for interpretation.
Our menu features meat and vegan dishes, as well as Surf & Turf creations and a selection of seafood. It evolves with the seasons, allowing us to work with ingredients at their very best.
Alongside our à la carte menu, we also create tailored dining experiences for larger groups — from corporate gatherings and private dinners to special occasions. Depending on the nature of the event, we can design an individual menu suited to the number of guests, the occasion and their preferences.

Music is part of our daily ritual.
From Monday to Saturday, between 7:00 and 10:00 PM, we invite you to enjoy live music at CANIS. Each evening features a different artist, giving every night its own unique character.
MONDAY
Bartosz "Popielnica" Popiołek
If we are talking about originality, this is its purest form. A distinctive style, an unconventional choice of instruments and a voice you simply cannot mistake for anyone else.
His music takes you on a journey through country, blues and bluegrass - with the raw energy of a legendary New York club like CBGB.
Luckily, you don't have to travel far to experience it. Just join us at CANIS every Monday.
TUESDAY
Maciej Blumkowski
The longest-standing member of the CANIS music family, Maciej has been part of our story for over five years.
A singer and guitarist, he uses a looper to build rich, layered arrangements live on stage. His repertoire spans Polish and English-language songs across a variety of genres.
The perfect soundtrack for an elegant dinner and a relaxed evening with good music
WEDNESDAY
Nela Szmelter
The newest member of the CANIS music gang, Nela quickly found her place in our unique atmosphere.
Her arrangements, built around carefully selected backing tracks, bring a fresh sense of emotion and creativity to every performance. Some songs take on an almost theatrical quality in her hands, creating an engaging and memorable experience.
THURSDAY
Tomek Fridrych
A true crowd favourite. His guitar playing and distinctive voice have a way of drawing you in from the very first note.
His interpretations of rock, pop and blues classics are known to make guests leave their tables just to make sure that what they are hearing is actually happening live.
FRIDAY
Paul DeFatta
Singer, songwriter and a little bit of a philosopher. Originally from Texas, Paul spent years travelling the world before falling in love with Poland and making it his home.
His rock covers and guitar playing are truly world-class.
And one small piece of advice: don't ask him about ABBA.
SATURDAY
Zuzia & Iwo
An energetic duo with remarkable chemistry and a repertoire all their own.
Their interpretations of songs such as On Melancholy Hill and Karmelove stay with you long after the last note.
Their distinctive combination of guitar and flute adds another layer to their performances, giving them a sound that is truly their own.
